Outrunning the Bear: Cybersecurity in the AI Era

Cybersecurity Expert JC Raby on Shifts in the Field and What Lies Ahead
JC Raby, managing director, head of emerging technology, JP Morgan Investment Banking

With the rapid deployment of artificial intelligence, the hype cycle over the last two years is "much more accelerated than we have seen in traditional market shifts," said JC Raby, managing director, head of emerging technology, JP Morgan Investment Banking. But the swift pace of application development and the drive to capture market opportunities are outpacing advancements in security.

"It's a quantum leap over where the market is trying to catch up from a security perspective," Raby said. Starting in the late '90s with foundational technology such as early firewalls, Raby's journey as a cybersecurity expert has paralleled the shift from basic protections to sophisticated, AI-driven defenses.

"The speed at which threats are coming to market, or coming into the environment, is incredible. And AI only threatens to accelerate that, given that you can mount a full-scale attack using a number of attack surface management visibility," he said. "You know the analogy 'outrunning the bear versus your friend'? It's not easy. The bear can get him and get you at the same time."

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group at RSA Conference 2024, Raby also discussed:

  • The continuous transformation of cybersecurity tools, from early penetration testing to advanced AI solutions;
  • Where venture capitalists are investing in cybersecurity and the emerging trends they are monitoring;
  • The role of mergers and acquisitions in shaping the future of data security as companies seek technologies to lead the next wave.

Raby has nearly three decades of investment banking/M&A advisory and corporate executive experience. His clients include leading Fortune 500 acquirers, middle-market growth companies across industries including cybersecurity, enterprise software, infrastructure software, media and technology, and e-commerce, together accounting for billions in transaction value.
